FortisBC is encouraging customers to keep meters clear of snow as winter unfolds.

As winter unfolds FortisBC is reminding people to be careful and make sure their natural gas meters have enough room to work efficiently.

Customers are encouraged to clear any built up snow, by hand only, from around the metres until the regulator and shutoff valve are clear.

"We also want to remind people to avoid kicking or hitting the meter in an attempt to break ice or snow build-up, to avoid using a snowplow or blower near their meter and when shovelling," said Erika Schade, corporate communications advisor with Fortis.

If customers do have any snow or ice buildup on either their meter or regulator, they are encouraged to call FortisBC immediately at 1-888-224-2710.

"We did have a situation in Northern B.C. with someone trying to remove the ice from their natural gas meter," Schade said.

Customers can find more information on meter safety on the FortisBC website.
