Kamloops Fire Rescue crews have been called to the Emterra Environmental recycling depot on Kelly Douglas Road in Valleyview, where black smoke is rising into the sky as a result of cardboard on fire outside the facility.

The fire appears to have started at about 11 a.m.

Firefighters continued to douse flames at 12:30 p.m. with water as particles of ash swirled from the sky, landing on vehicles in the Tim Hortons parking lot across Highway 1 from Emterra.

While the blaze looked to be somewhat contained, flames could still be seen as an ambulance waited on standby and crews appeared to be cutting power lines in the area.

Employees of Emterra have been evacated from the facility and train traffic has been paused while crews fight the fire.

As of noon, reports indicate flames have spread into nearby grass.
