The Ministry of Social Development is mailing income assistance cheques one week early this month, in case Canada Post experiences a work disruption.

Minister of Social Development Harry Bloy announced Wednesday people who receive income assistance should expect their monthly payment on May 18, rather than May 25.

This date change includes people who receive payment via cheque or via direct deposit into their bank accounts.

For further details, people may call the ministry’s information line at 1-866-866-0800.

Canada Post is in negotiations with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

The union has the option to go on strike May 25, which may disrupt mail delivery.
