A high streamflow advisory has been issued for the Cariboo region by the BC River Forecast Centre.
The advisory, issued Thursday afternoon, is for the Cariboo Mountain and eastern Mid-Fraser tributaries including the Quesnel River, Horsefly River, Baker Creek and the Cottonwood River.
Heavy rainfall on the May long weekend and on-going snow melt has pushed river levels through the region to near or above mean-annual peak flow levels, states the Centre.
Even more rain is forecasted for this weekend –– anywhere from 15 to 40 mm possible from Friday through Monday.
The Quesnel River is forecasted to rise slightly while the Horsefly River above McKinley Creek is expected to see additional rises through the weekend to add to its already high waters.
According to the River Forecast Centre, rivers in the region are sensitive to rainfall this weekend due to already saturated soils in the headwaters and limited available capacity in the river systems.
"The amount and location where rainfall occurs will be a determining factor as to which rivers are impacted and the extent of river rise," states the advisory.
A high streamflow advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flowing is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
