Gas tax funding increases

Williams Lake and other communities across Canada can expect to receive an increase in federal gas tax funding under new agreement.

Williams Lake and other communities across Canada can expect to receive an increase in federal gas tax funding under a new agreement announcement, Mayor Kerry Cook said Tuesday.

“There has been an increase and the federal government has agreed to the two per cent indexing as well.”

With the announcement comes more flexibility with what recipients can do with the funding. It’s been opened up to recreation and other items which weren’t eligible in the past, Cook said.

Williams Lake will receive $485,144 in 2014/15 and 2015/16, $509,443 in 2016/17 and 2017/18, and $533,747 in 2018/19.

It’s significant funding that helps with the cost of building community frastructure, Cook said.
