The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is holding a public information session Wednesday, April 13 in Williams Lake.

"Now that we are receiving 100 per cent of the revenue from freshwater fishing licenses we want to let the public know how the funds will be spent and invested," said JP Dunlop, the society's marketing co-ordinator.

Up until last year, the society was receiving 75 per cent of the license sales, he added.

During the information session at the Coast Fraser Inn from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the public will be given the opportunity to ask questions and provide input.

Dunlop said programming from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC includes raising fry in hatcheries and stocking 800 lakes across the province.

"We also have our learn-to-fish program that puts through about 25,000 people a year," Dunlop said, noting the program teaches people the basics about fishing, fish identification, knots, everything people need to know to start fishing.

The Tourism Discovery Centre in Williams Lake was one of the first locations to collaborate with the society's fish rod loan program, which has now expanded to about 20 locations.

"It's a nice way for people who are travelling through the province, and have had an introduction to fishing, but don't want to make the commitment to spending a bunch of money right away before they know if it's something they want to do over the long haul," Dunlop said of the rod loan program.
