There were more than 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history. The Second World War was the deadliest military conflict in history.

More than 60 million people were killed, which was more than 2.5 per cent of the world population. Military people and civilians continue to die in global conflict around the world today, among them Canadian military people.
