Evacuation alert issued for Dean River wildfire area, 50 km north of Bella Coola

The area includes several seasonal cabins

An evacuation alert has been issued on the Central Coast because of the Dean River Wildfire, 50 km north of Bella Coola.

Effective Wednesday, July 11 at 8 p.m., the alert was issued by the Central Coast Regional District (CCR) for an area that includes several seasonal cabins.

The fire is estimated at 313 hectares as of Wednesday, July 12. It was discovered on Saturday, July 8 and measured .09 hectares at that point.

Coastal Fire Centre information officer Nick Donnelly said Wednesday the BC Wildfire Service has been in contact with the four cabin owners impacted by the alert.

“A structure protection unit has been sent to assist,” he added, encouraging people to fire smart their properties.

Information can be found at FireSmart BC.

An alert has been issued to prepare people to evacuate premises or property should it be required, noted the CCRD, adding residents will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to an evacuation order; however, they may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.

What residents should do:

Have a plan to transport all family members should the area be brought under an evacuation order.

Fill the gas tanks of personal vehicles or watercraft as required.

Keep essential items such as medications, eyeglasses, government-issued ID, valuable documents, immediate care needs for dependents or pets, and, if you choose, keepsakes, readily available for a quick departure.

Ensure that all dependents are prepared for departure.

Prepare to move pets and livestock to a safe area.

Arrange accommodation options for your family, if possible.

Check with your insurer to determine what may be available to you – homeowner or tenant insurance may provide greater support than the Emergency Support Services program.
