A problem with an electrical panel is being blamed for a small fire inside the Telus building on Third Avenue Sunday evening.

At about 5:12 p.m. the Williams Lake Fire Department was called to the scene when smoke alarms inside and outside the building went off.

"We are not quite sure what caused the short, but it severely damaged one of the main panels," said Fire Chief Des Webster, noting the extent was contained to the panel itself.

The panel was located in the basement, and while it wasn't evident from the outside, the building inside was full of smoke, Webster added.

Webster said the department responded with two trucks and 14 members, spending about an hour and a half at the scene.
