Dust advisory issued for Williams Lake

High concentrations of dust in Williams Lake has caused the Ministry of Environment and Interior Health to issue a dust advisory for the city.

High concentrations of dust in Williams Lake has caused the Ministry of Environment and Interior Health to issue a dust advisory for the city.

The concentrations are expected to persist until Friday.

The dusty conditions are caused by road traffic stirring up winter traction materials that have accumulated on roadways over the past winter.

This episode, the ministry says, is expected to continue until there is a change in weather patterns.

The advisory has been triggered by high concentrations of dust, measured as particulates 10 micrometres or smaller in diametre.

The 24-hours average concentration exceeds the provincial air quality objective.

The ministry advises residents to avoid strenuous activities and to stay indoors with windows and doors closed to help reduce exposure.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, seniors, and those who have underlying medical conditions such as breathing or lung conditions, hay fever, asthma, or people who react strongly to dust.

If you experience symptoms such as continuing eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheeze, follow the advice of your health-care provider.
