A plan by the Tsilhqot'in National Government to renovate the former Kwaleen Elementary School has the full support of WIlliams Lake city council.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, council agreed to write a letter of support for the Tsilhqot'in National Government's efforts to secure funding to renovate the school into a community centre and office space for the delivery of recreational programming for Cariboo area residents.
Earlier this year, the TNG purchased the vacant school and property from School District 27.
When Coun. Craig Smith asked if the property will need to be rezoned for the renovation, director of development services Leah Hartley said it did not.
"The uses that have been presented to us so far are already permitted under the zoning that is in place," Hartley said.
Fire damaged building to be demolished
City council has approved the demolition of a fire damaged building at Williams Inn, located at 55 Sixth Avenue South.
The demolition work will go out to tender and once it is finalized the owner of the property and mortgage holder on the title will be given 30 days notice.
Development permits approved
Council approved an application to redevelop the front facade of the building located at 28 Broadway Avenue North.
United Concrete and Gravel Ltd.'s application to reconstruct the portions of the business that were destroyed by a fire in May was approved by council. Council also authorized the sale of part of a nearby lot to be consolidated into United Concrete's existing property at 245 Hodgson Road. The sale is in the amount of $18,500
Signal Point mountain bike trail development approved
The development of mountain bike trails in the Signal Point area is now on the City's project list for 2017 and staff has been authorized to pursue grant funding for the project.
Boys and Girls Club street party planned
Council approved the closure of the alley below Oliver Street between Third Avenue South and Fourth Avenue South for the Boys and Girls Club of Williams Lake and District's 14th annual family street party taking place Thursday, Aug. 18 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Aviation fuel agreement authorized
The 2016 standing offer for aviation fuel at the Williams Lake Airport with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations was approved by council.
