The Williams Lake Fire Department will be conducting controlled burns of long grasses in the coming weeks to mitigate fire risk and conduct training sessions.
Homeowners are being advised that these burns will create smoke, so they may take measures necessary to prevent smoke from entering their homes.
The burns will be conducted between 6 and 9 p.m., weather permitting, in the following areas.
• Tuesday, April 17 — Gibbon Street Water Tower
• Thursday, April 19 — hillside behind Williams Lake Secondary School
• Tuesday, April 24 — hillside behind Boitanio Mall and vacant lot across from the fire hall
• Wednesday, April 25 — Stampede Grounds hill below Oliver Street.
Questions can be directed to the Williams Lake Fire Department at 250-392-4321 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Effective April 2, the size of fires were restricted within the Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect the public.
The public is prohibited from burning any waste, slash, or other materials (piled or unpiled) at a size larger than one metre by one metre; the burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time; and stubble or grass fires of any size over any area.
The Williams Lake Fire Department says no fires are permitted in the city.
