If you are originally from China and are living in Portland, Oregon where would you go to find ice and snow?

For one family fitting that description, the answer is Williams Lake.

"We have been here for two days," said Lin Wei as her husband Hao Geng and their two sons Weilson, 8, and William, 5, skated,  behind her on the ice that has covered Williams Lake for about a week now.

The family had just finished building themselves a little igloo on the ice near the boat launch at Scout Island and agreed to have a photo taken.

"My husband is from a very cold part of China so we wanted to find somewhere cold," Lin said.  "We started driving north to see what we could find and ended up here."

They have been staying at the Lakeside Motel and are planning  to depart Saturday, for a destination yet to be determined.

Hao is a cancer researcher and Lin works at Intel in Portland.

She met her husband in Portland, she said.

Other families were using the frozen lake today as well, with one father pulling his children around on sleds dragged behind an ATV and another man parasailing.

With temperatures forecasted to remain below zero, hovering in the minus teens, between Christmas and New Year's, it is anticipated that more people will be seen on the lake in the coming days.

Merry Christmas one and all from the Tribune.
