Cariboo Community Church granted parking variance, again

At its meeting Tuesday City Council revoted and once again approved the parking variance for the Cariboo Community Church.

At its meeting Tuesday City Council revoted and once again approved the parking variance for the Cariboo Community Church going into the old Field's Store on Oliver Street in Williams Lake.

As a result the church will only need to provide 25 parking spaces rather than the normally required 98.

Throughout the application process, church members told council that some of the surrounding businesses had offered their parking spaces on Sundays when they were closed.

The item was approved at the last council meeting, but the city received complaints that Coun. Sue Zacharias, being a member of the church, should have declared a conflict of interest.

A petition was circulated as well, Mayor Walt Cobb said.

Before the revote, Zacharias said she sought legal advice and was told it wasn't a conflict.

However, she excused herself from the voting because of a "perceived" conflict.

Councillors Scott Nelson, Jason Ryll and Laurie Walters voted in favour, while Coun. Ivan Bonnell voted against, saying he preferred the covenant option.

Coun. Craig Smith was absent from the meeting.
