The financial situation at the BC SPCA Williams Lake Branch is “extremely trying,” said branch manager Liz Dighton.
“We are a few steps away from being desperate,” Dighton told the Tribune Friday. “Because of the wildfires in 2017 and 2018, we thought it was best not to try and fundraise because we knew people were being supportive of people impacted by the fires, but that has left us with a real shortfall.”
Normally the local branchs hosts the annual Paws for a Cause in September, but decided to forego that as well, she added.
Things the branch is in need of include cash donations because they can go toward paying gas and hydro bills, sheets, towels, cleaning supplies, salt for the walkways to make them safe and pet-safe salt for the back areas.
On a positive note, they are very busy, but not crazy busy, Dighton said.
“We’ve got some kittens and adult cats up for adoption, but the three dogs we have are all spoken for.”
During the summer people brought in a lot of strays that were found in town and west of Williams Lake, but since then the branch has not been overwhelmed with too many animals.

Dighton said they are finalizing their 2019 adopted animals photo calendar and will be ready to sell them after Remembrance Day.
They have also scheduled an adult pub night with a theme of “Beat the Monday Blues,” taking place on Monday, Nov. 5 at the Boston Pizza sports bar.
Details are being finalized for the event, however, Dighton said a ticket will get the buyer a burger and glass of draft beer or wine.
“There will also be games with prizes, door prizes, a silent auction and a live auction and who know what else.”
