The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced plans to build a temple in Victoria, the second LDS temple in B.C. and the 11th in Canada

On Sunday, April 7, LDS president Russell Nelson made the announcement at the church’s annual general conference in Utah to build 15 new temples worldwide, including a temple in Victoria.

“Temples are places of peace and tranquility,” John Borrows, chair of the Victoria Multifaith Society and a member of the church, said in a news release. “The Victoria British Columbia Temple’s serenity and beauty will enhance Victoria’s rich and varied heritage of faith and worship.”

According to the release, the Latter-day Daints consider temples to be the “house of the lord” and they are the most sacred places of worship.

A location for the temple has yet to be announced.

The first temple in B.C. was built in Langley and was dedicated in 2010. Other Canadian temples are in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Montreal, Toronto and Halifax.

The church has two stakes – the equivilent of a diocese – on Vancouver Island, one in Nanaimo and one in Greater Victoria, which has about 2,000 members.
