A group of local ladies are encouraging women of all abilities to get out on the ice and give hockey a try this winter.
The puck drops for the Williams Lake Women's Hockey League (WLWHL) on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. League games will take place on Sunday and Monday nights, with each team playing once a week. Teams will have a 15-game regular season and three playoff games to make it to the finals.
The WLWHL, in preparation for their upcoming season, offered an event for ladies who hadn't played for awhile, were new to the game and to get some tips and time on the ice and in gear.
"Dust off the Rust" took place on Aug. 29, and was the first chance for potential players to step on the ice for the coming season.
The league was spearheaded by Kerri Dunsmore, but with involvement from a number of local women now supporting the organization.
The league is aimed at making the sport fun for all skill levels.
"Our league offers more than just a chance to play hockey. It's an opportunity for women to engage in physical activity, foster new friendships, and contribute to a growing community spirit in Williams Lake," said Kourtney Cook, vice president of the league.
The event on Aug. 29 had a good turnout to the Cariboo Recreation Centre for some skills drills and community-building and Dunsmore said they hope to host more before the season gets underway.
Registration for the league opened on Aug. 31 and there is space for four teams.
