Williams Lake basketball players in Grade 9 will be competing at the provincials in Coquitlam Feb. 29 to March 3.

Coach Travis Nystoruk said the team gained a spot after competing at the junior boys basketball North Central zones in Prince George, mostly against Grade 10s. The provincials will take place at Centennial Secondary School and see 24 teams competing.

Playing on the team are Dominic (Nick) Hordiuk, Linkin Proctor, Ethan Bluda, Tristan Gullickson, Nathan Del Rosario, Ben Zirnhelt, Evan Buchi, Alex Walker, Hayder Braithwaite, Choesang Doan, Jake Moulton and Roman Aulakh.

“It’s been a really good season,” Nystoruk said.

The team has travelled to Prince George, Kamloops, Quesnel, Ashcroft, 100 Mile House and the Okanagan.

“They are a hardworking group of boys who show up at every practice. It’s been a really fun experience,” Nystoruk said.

Athlete Nick Hordiuk said he has really enjoyed the year.

“I’ve worked harder than I ever have,” he said.

Looking toward the provincials, Nick shared he does not expect to win but sees this year as a practice year.

Tristan Gullickson said it was cool to play at the zones.

“I enjoy winning, shooting, competing and working hard,” Tristan said.
