Sunset Series in Williams Lake sees solid turnout

Sixty riders came out to test their mettle in another fun mountain biking race event on June 5 in Williams Lake.

Mountain bikers came out once again to test their mettle in another fun mountain biking race event on June 5 in Williams Lake.

The previous week, wet and slippery conditions on the trails thanks to some spring rain led to the event being postponed from the original date on May 29.

But on Wednesday, Cariboo trails had dried up quickly after some sunshine and riders said conditions were great.

Sixty mountain bikers rode in the race down Mitch's Brew on Fox Mountain and many more helped to marshal and manage it, helping out with first aid, safety, registration and timing.

The event was one of three scheduled for this spring, with one more event left on June 19, organized by the Williams Lake Cycling Club. This is the second year of the race series, aimed at giving young riders an opportunity to practice racing and to build community in the sport.

Participants pay $5 to race in the events, with winners getting bragging rights and their $5 entrance fee returned. To register, racers must be a Williams Lake Cycling Club member.

Celebrations and awards after each race takes place at a local watering hole, with the June 5 event ending up at the Laughing Loon Pub.

Riders hoping to participate in the June 19 event can register the day of the event at the Tourism Discovery Centre parking lot.
