Stamps vs. Alumni game on Dec. 30 ends in a win for current team

Hockey fans in Williams Lake came out to cheer on the new and the old Williams Lake Stampeders hockey team for the Stamps vs. Alumni game on Dec. 30.

When asked which side they were cheering for, the crowd sounded their support for either side, with a pretty big bias towards the Alumni team.

The score did not go in the Alumni’s favour, however, with the board showing 10-3 in favour of the current Williams Lake Stampeders as the final buzzer sounded.

The first period things were still up in the air, as current Stamps players Ryan Yaw0rski and Ethan Smid sent home one goal each while the Alumni came up short.

But the second period saw the game get away from the Alumni team, despite a goal by Tyrel Lucas and another by Matt Lees. Current Stamps Nic Flinton alone managed a hat trick in the second period, with the team helped along by three other goals in the same period by Cole Zimmerman, Lane Wycotte, and Ethan Smid.

The third saw the Alumni make one more goal thanks to Nathan Zurak, but Ryan Yaworski and Lane Wycotte both answered back by landing a second goal each in the third.

It was a lively game, despite the final score, and there was a lot for the crowd to enjoy, with the usual attractions like t-shirts from the cannon, the puck toss, and a puck shot from a young fan at centre ice making it into one of the tiny holes on net during breaks between periods.

So overall, the big winners may not have been the current team at all, but the fans, and especially Jericho Murphy-Lulua, who made the amazing shot to win himself $25.

Jericho said he planned to save the money towards a tournament trip his own hockey team will be going on this season.
