Drop-in hockey aims to up ice time for youth

Denisiqi Service Society and other community partners are teaming up to get more youth out on the ice this winter

A new drop-in hockey program for youth ages 13-18 will help give underserved youth some development time on the ice.

Denisiqi Services Society, in collaboration with BGC Club Williams Lake, Williams Lake First Nation, Chilcotin Grizzlies Hockey Club, and Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex, is offering the free drop-in ice hockey program.

The inclusive initiative aims to promote physical activity, community engagement, and a love of hockey among young people.

The program takes place every Friday afternoon from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex, providing a fun, supportive, and respectful environment where youth can learn, play, and build friendships.

"Whether you're stepping onto the ice for the first time or you're an experienced player, everyone is welcome to participate," said Lane Spooner, with Denisiqi Service Society and one of the organizers.

Full hockey gear is required for participants, and to ensure the safety of all players, and equipment is available for those who may need it.

Special guests will be joining participants on the ice throughout the year, offering players the opportunity to learn from and interact with experienced players and hockey professionals.

The program is supported by Lane Spooner, who works with Denisiqi Services Society, Derek Godin from BGC, and Cody Call with Williams Lake First Nation.

"This drop-in ice hockey program is more than just about the game, it's about building community, encouraging healthy lifestyles, and celebrating the love of sport in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere," said Spooner.
