A new snow and ice clearing policy was passed at the regular city council meeting on Nov. 5 at city hall.

The new policy provides updates to the existing one from 2016 with the aim "to document procedures that set reasonable timelines and service levels for the effective handling of snow/ice during the winter season."

A report and the policy can be read in the meeting's agenda.

The policy is meant to clarify the service levels the city is providing and ensure community members are aware of the Good Neighbour Bylaw, which requires property owners or residents to clear sidewalks within a certain amount of time as well.

The city divides the municipality into three priority classifications, with priority one being: downtown, school zones, emergency routes, collector roads and bus routes.

Second priority includes hills, side streets and critical utility routes.

Sidewalk clearing is prioritized along certain routes as well and the policy said sidewalk-clearing in those areas aims to be done within 24 hours of a storm event of more than five centimetres of snowfall.
