Williams Lake Mayor Surinderpal Rathor took to Facebook Thursday evening to share news about crime reduction in the city.

"Big progress is already being made within the first 24 hrs of deployment," wrote the mayor.  "The presence of this specialized unit is delivering real results — targeting repeat offenders, enhancing visibility, and working closely with our local RCMP to address the root causes of crime."

Rathor said "this is a strong step forward in restoring safety and confidence in our community, and we’re just getting started. More updates to come as this important work continues."

On Tuesday, during a special council meeting to discuss possibly declaring a State of Local Emergency (SoLE), Rathor said the RCMP had committed to deploying the Cariboo-Chilcotin Crime Reduction Unit to Williams Lake to assess the situation and develop operational plans as required.

City council did not vote in favour of declaring the SoLE.
