Organizers of the National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration in Williams Lake invite everyone in the community to attend on Friday, June 21.

A parade will kick off the day, beginning at 10 a.m. on First Avenue South before proceeding along Oliver Street to Boitanio Park.

In the park there will be events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. including performances from Uncle Chris the Clown, Storytelling with Danikka, Bannock Belly competition, drumming and more.

"National Indigenous Peoples Day is so important for all of our communities because it gives us an opportunity to celebrate each other's cultures and to heal together," said city councillor Michael Moses.

In 1996, the Governor General of Canada proclaimed June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day for Canadians to reflect on and celebrate the unique heritage, traditions, and knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
