Mount Timothy Ski Resort (MTSR) has announced the local ski hill won’t open this year due to warm weather and poor snow conditions.

The ski hill announced this decision on Wednesday, Jan. 24 in a statement released on social media. They said they made the decision due to the warm temperatures, a lack of precipitation in the forecast over the next few weeks and how late it is into the traditional ski/snowboard season.

“We are truly sorry to all those this difficult decision has affected, as we were hoping for another amazing season also this year,” MTSR stated. “We did not come about this decision lightly and are hoping for a better season next year. We would truly like to thank all those who have supported us.”

Typically Mount Timothy opens just before or after Christmas when the South Cariboo tends to get several feet of snow. This year warm temperatures combined with unusual weather patterns has resulted in little to no snow across the region. This weather also impacted the 100 Mile Nordics Ski Society who were forced to cancel their Northern Teck Cup Race earlier this month.

Those who have already purchased season passes, punch cards and gift certificates for this ski season will not be left out in the cold, however. Mount Timothy had decided to remove the expiry dates on certificates and punch cards already purchased so they will remain valid until used.

Season pass holders, meanwhile, are encouraged to call the resort at 250-396-4095 to discuss their options. To recoup lost revenue, Mount Timothy’s restaurant will be opened in the coming weeks from Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While MTSR won’t be open for skiing and snowboarding, they indicated they have alternatives in mind but did not elaborate on those ideas at this time.
