Diane Shendruk, VP of clinical operations for Interior Health north, gave an update on Cariboo Memorial Hospital upgrades to city council on February 27

Shendruk shared the latest on the project with Williams Lake mayor and council at their regular meeting as part of the Interior Health quarterly update.

She said the large investment in the facility will help to attract health care workers to the upgraded and modern building once completed.

Phase one is meant to be completed in the fall of 2026 and includes a new pharmacy department in the lower level of the new part of the facility.

Level one of the new build will include an emergency department, level two will have medical beds and level three will be the maternity and surgical departments.

“I do want to really emphasize the importance of engagement, we do take that seriously,” said Shendruk.

She noted Indigenous elements, wayfinding and strategic use of colour will all be integrated into the design.

Phase two is planned for 2029 and will include support areas like health records, the main lobby, ambulatory care and adult psychiatry.

It will also include training spaces for UBC’s Faculty of Medicine.

The upgrades will include over 25 new inpatient beds.

The upgrades are budgeted at over $366 million.

The quarterly update by Interior Health at the meeting was over 30 minutes long and was followed by comments and questions from council.
