A recreational vehicle caught fire at an Elm Street address, but the vehicle was not on Elm Street. Had it been driving, or parked out in the laneway, it might not have been so dangerous, but Quesnel Fire Department (QFD) responders had a harder time keeping the flames in a tight space because of the RV’s placement.

For reasons that were not disclosed, the fire was located inside the RV while it was stationary in the driveway of a home.

The fire threatened that home, with its carport immediately to the burning vehicle’s left, and it also could have easily reached the neighbouring home on the vehicle’s right.

Alongside the fiery motorhome was a row of adult evergreen trees, adding another tall order to the fire department’s chores, and a larger RV parked directly in front of the heat.

“The challenges with a fire like this is protecting (the adjacent area) and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures,” said QFD fire chief Ron Richert.

Thirteen firefighters and four trucks attended the scene, which was called in to the QFD just after 1 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 5).

“Upon arrival we had a fully involved RV motorhome on fire,” Richert described. “The RV was parked next to a residential home which suffered minimal damage. The fire did spread to a nearby fence and large tree. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and prevented any further damage.”
