Work continues to create a shelter in the former Elks Hall in Williams Lake.

BC Housing expects the new shelter going into the former Elks Hall on First Avenue South should be completed by May or June.

“There’s quite a bit of work to do still but they are making good progress," said BC Housing Corporation director of regional development Tyler Baker during a presentation to city council at its regular meeting Tuesday, Jan. 28.

He told council they are in the early stages of construction with building systems and framing.

Once the shelter is completed, the plan is to move current residents at the Hamilton Hotel Shelter to the new shelter at First Avenue as seamlessly as possible, followed by the decommission of the Hamilton Shelter, Baker said.

Baker and Nanette Drobot, portfolio manager for BC Housing, appeared at the council meeting to provide an update on the new shelter as well as plans for the redevelopment of Jubilee Place on Carson Drive.

BC Housing is currently working with a design team and architect to determine what the layout of the new building at Jubilee Place will look like, as well as to determine estimated costs and planning housing arrangements for the current residents once a design has been approved and a development permit has been issued by the city, Baker said.

The upgrade is at the schematic stage and they are looking at around 40 to 50 units for supportive housing as this is the number which is manageable for staffing, he added.
