87th annual Williams Lake Bull Show and Sale aims for quality

While the number of bulls were down a bit, the quality was up, said 87th Williams Lake Bull Show and Sale chair Bob Gowans last Thursday, April 18.

“We are just trying to keep this thing going,” Gowans said as he opened the sale. “Hopefully over the next years we can get our numbers up a little bit.”

April is a great time of year for a sale and to get out and see other producers, he added.

Judging the historic sale was Ricky Seelhof of Horsefly’s Woodjam Ranch.

“The reason I chose the first bull is I liked how he looks,” Seelhof said as she judged the Champion Yearling owned by Clint Smith of Smith Farms in Abbotsford. “He’s clean, with a nice wide back and second same thing, he’s a nice bull too.”

After the show, she said the producers should be proud of themselves for the stock they brought the show and sale. “It was tough judging, they were all around nice bulls.”

Seelhof said she looks for good bones, good feet because they have to cover a lot of country, and they have to be pretty tough.

“I look for length and depth, they have to have good loin, the way their hocks are set for breeding and being able to cover the country to get the job done.”

She loves everything about ranching and was born and raised on one.

“I live and breathe it so there is nothing I don’t like about it.”

It is important to support ranchers and appreciating where the food comes from, she added.

“If we did not have farmers and ranchers we would not have anything to eat.”
