Editor:
I share the view expressed by Thomas Schoen in his recent letter (Dec 16, 2024) encouraging the city council to increase taxes to pay for much-needed infrastructure upgrades. Delaying our responsibilities costs more in the long run and is inflationary.
I keep hearing how tough times are. I also keep hearing how airlines are setting records for air travel and this summer BC Ferries set records for ridership. People don’t appear to be too poor to travel extensively.
When it comes to priorities, we should put taking care of our city ahead of of our luxuries. Our mayor and council should be advocates for our city and its needs. They should be the adults in the room. Responsibilities come first. When times are tough you cut back on the luxuries and take care of the necessities. Short- term pain for long-term gain. Not the other way around.
We wouldn’t be in this situation if previous councils had fulfilled their responsibilities and done the job at a far lower cost when times were good. Don’t perpetuate the mistakes of the past. Determine tax increases based on the city’s needs. Everyone can pay a little.
As Mayor (and Council) I believe it’s your responsibility to explain it, sell it and get it done.
