Students at the school in Tatla Lake learned about democracy by participating in Student Vote B.C. 2024.
CIVIX offers schools the opportunity to participate in the voting process and this year 25 schools in the Cariboo Chilcotin signed up.
Tatla Lake principal Kimberley Ikebuchi said prior to voting they used resources from CIVIX to learn about the various levels of government in Canada and the process of voting in British Columbia.
"We took time to read about our candidates Lorne Doerkson — Conservative Party and Michael Moses — B.C. NDP and their platforms prior to voting. Each student was provided a ‘Voter Registration Card’ and our two grade 8 students, Amelia Harris and Liam Daud, served as Voting Officers. Our voting ballot results were tabulated and phoned in to CIVIX at the end of the day," she explained.
The student ballots are counted after the regular election is held and the results are then shared.
CIVIX is a non-partisan, national registered charity.
Its website notes it is dedicated to building the skills and habits of active and informed citizenship among young Canadians.
Editor's note: We encourage schools in the region to send us their Student Vote photographs to add to the gallery.
