The Williams Lake Fire Department's annual boot drive raises over $10,000 to improve the quality of life for people with muscular dystrophy.

Members of the Williams Lake Fire Department kick off their annual boot drive Friday, Sept. 20 to raise funds for muscular dystrophy (MD).

Firefighters will be shaking their boots over the weekend for donations towards improving the quality of life for people living with MD and to raise awareness about the condition.

“We’re always thrown away by the generosity of Williams Lake,” said Dereck Sulentich, a local firefighter and Cariboo Regional Advisor for Muscular Dystrophy. The team’s goal is to raise $10,000, but Sulentich said they always surpass that mark. He said he hopes their efforts will help find a cure for muscular dystrophy.

Members of the Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department will be around to help with this weekend's fundraiser and will also be collecting donations in their own community for the first time.

Firefighters will be stationed across the city on Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McDonalds, Tim Hortons, BC Liquor, Save-On-Foods, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Canadian Tire, Walmart and FreshCo. They will also be out on Saturday and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m.
