100 Mile House RCMP investigate break-and-enter and thefts

A collection of incidents the 100 Mile House RCMP responded to last week

100 Mile House RCMP responded to several reports of thefts and break-and-enters last week.

Sgt. Brian Lamb said the RCMP received 110 calls for service between Aug. 27 and Sept. 3 for a wide range of incidents. This included a break and enter at Nuthatch Books on Birch Avenue on Friday, Aug. 30.

Lamb said RCMP attended the scene where they determined an unknown individual broke one of the store's windows and stole several pieces of jewellery. The 100 Mile Free Press talked with an employee Friday who confirmed the perpetrator used a rock to break the window. The incident is believed to have occurred sometime overnight.

Stolen Bike

Also on Friday RCMP received a report of a bicycle stolen from a residential property on Heron Ridge Road. Sometime between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29 a Kona 'Clump 7500' Mountain bike was taken from the property. Lamb noted the bike was secured at the time and the bike's lock is believed to have been cut.

Business Theft

In the evening of Friday, Aug. 30 at 6:30 p.m. Lamb said officers received reports of a theft from a business on the 500 block of Alder Avenue. He said a male described as a 5'10 Indigenous man wearing a blue hoodie, red hat and red shorts took food items without paying. When questioned by staff the man allegedly fled and left the area in a white pickup truck.

Shortly after this initial incident, Lamb said RCMP received reports of another theft from the 90 block of Highway 97. An individual with the same description was reported to have entered the business accompanied by another man described as being 6'2" wearing a black shirt, black shorts, black hat and sunglasses. Lamb said the first male is believed to have left the store with unpaid items while the other male distracted an employee.

Lamb said police are currently in the process of attempting to identify the males using surveillance footage.

Three Vehicle MVI

On Thursday, Aug. 29 RCMP responded to reports of a three-vehicle collision on Highway 97 by Fourth Avenue. Lamb said RCMP attended with emergency health services and spoke with several witnesses and the parties involved.

It was determined a vehicle travelling south on Highway 97 made a left turn onto Fourth Avenue and collided with a vehicle travelling north on Highway 97. This resulted in one of the vehicles striking another vehicle which was sitting stationary in the left turn lane at the intersection. One driver was taken to hospital by EHS.

Impaired Driver

Also on Thursday, Lamb said RCMP received a report of a person passed out and then acting erratic in a vehicle on the 300 Block of Highway 97. Police attended with EHS and found two people within the vehicle, each displaying symptoms of recent drug use with drug paraphernalia observed in the vehicle.

Lamb said RCMP determined the person in the driver seat was in control of a vehicle while impaired. As a result, a 24-hour driving prohibition was issued to this individual and the vehicle was towed. RCMP also issued a violation ticket for no insurance.

Break and Enter

At the beginning of the month, RCMP received reports of a break-and-enter at a business located in the 300 block of Taylor Avenue. Lamb said a window to the business had been broken and several items had been taken.

Surveillance footage of the incident captured a person wearing a grey hoodie which covered their head and face. The incident occurred at 5 a.m.

Theft at Watch Lake

Lamb said that on Sunday, Sept. 1 RCMP received a complaint of a theft from a property located in the 7000 block of Watch Lake Road. According to the complainant, two males had allegedly entered the property with a truck and trailer. They then loaded two outer walls onto a trailer.

After a neighbour confronted them the two males left. No description of vehicles or the unknown males was given to RCMP.

Impaired Driving

That same day Lamb said officers were conducting patrols along Highway 97 near Taton Station Road where they observed a vehicle not maintaining its lane. After stopping the vehicle Lamb said the driver admitted to the RCMP to consuming alcohol earlier that day.

A breath test returned a result of a warn. As a result, the driver was served an immediate roadside prohibition from driving for three days.

Stolen Jewellery

On Monday, Sept. 2 RCMP received reports of theft from a business in the 500 block of Alder Avenue. During the day a female wearing a red shirt left the business without paying for jewellery.

Solar Panel Stolen

A Canim Hendrix Lake Road residence was broken into at some point over the long weekend. Lamb said the unknown perpetrator stole a solar panel from the home, located in the 5000 block of Canim Hendrix Lake Road.

Anyone with information regarding the above incidents or any others is asked to contact 100 Mile House RCMP at 250-395-2456 or anonymously 24 hours a day at Crimestoppers at 1-800-222- TIPS (8477) or online at bccrimestoppers.com .

School Back in Session

With children returning to school across the South Cariboo starting on Wednesday, Sept. 4 Lamb said RCMP would like to remind the community to ensure they are driving safely in school zones. This includes obeying the 30 km/h speed limit in school zones and keeping an eye out for children walking to and from bus stops and schools in the mornings and afternoons.

"We are aware of recent changes to many bus routes in the 108 Mile Ranch which is resulting in children walking further distances along the roads at this location," Lamb said. "This will result in more pedestrian traffic in these areas than what was previous."

Lamb noted the new safe passing law that came into effect in April requires vehicles to keep at least one metre away from pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, scooters and wheelchair users in speed zone areas that are 50 km/h and lower. For higher speed zones, vehicles must keep a minimum distance of 1.5 metres when passing.

Fines for not adhering to school zone speeds and safe distance laws range from $196 to $483
