Williams Lake is a wonderful place. However, like everything, it has some room for improvement.

It was great to see people taking some action to make it even better this week.

People were out marking Earth Day by picking up garbage and planting trees, prepping for a beautiful spring and summer season, we hope.

Another thing great to see was the infusion of new life into the downtown, with a historic building being restored to give the area some more vitality.

With the Downtown Williams Lake annual general meeting taking place this week as well, it is great to know there are people and community invested in a healthy, lively downtown for our city.

There will always be challenges. Like many city centres, ours has become the front lines of the housing crisis and opioid epidemic.

But when people care, it shows.

Hopefully our downtown can continue to improve and thrive, and our community can come together to support it.

It will be easy to find reasons to come downtown in the coming months, as the Lakers Car Club prepares to host its annual event, the new Spring Festival will take place, the Williams Lake Children’s Festival will be held and the Royal Purple Society will host a fundraiser. Those are just the beginning, as Spring Go By Bike will also encourage people to use active transportation for local trips downtown, and Performances in the Park will begin in the summer, drawing crowds to the shade of trees in Boitanio Park.

We hope you find a reason to take part in celebrating and supporting the downtown of our city. Community is created by coming together. As the saying goes: Be the change you want to see in the world.
