Edward Garland of Williams Lake will receive the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers today for his work in the school district.

Garland will be honoured at a ceremony alongside David Johnston, the Governor General of Canada, Judith Guichon, the Lieutenant Governor of B.C., and 32 other recipients from B.C. at 3:30 p.m. at Government House.

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields and, as an official Canadian honour, it also pays tribute to the dedication and exemplary commitment of volunteers.

Here’s what the office of the Lieutenant Governor/Government House had to say about Garland:

“Edward Garland has contributed to the betterment of a local school for over 10 years. Whether it’s reading to students who are struggling academically, making minor repairs, arranging for maintenance work or keeping the entrance way clear of snow, his actions underscore his caring nature and his commitment to his community.
