The Cariboo Chilcotin Youth Fiddle Society is hosting string quartet out of Toronto Medusa for a Valentine’s Day concert in the Gibraltar Room.

Medusa is a quartet made up of string players Georgia Hathaway, Lea Kirstein, Marta Solek, and Saskia Tomkins, all with a passion for ancient instruments. Included in the arsenal of instruments are the nyckelharpa, suka, płock fiddle, and lyra. To find out what each sounds like, you’ll have to come and hear for yourself.

The name for the quartet comes from the Medusa myth, which they choose to see as “a symbol of vision, power, and inclusivity, and a source of inspiration for anyone who has been denied their true self.”

Medusa was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for their debut album. Their sound integrates Scandinavian, Middle Eastern, Celtic, Appalachian and Eastern European music, along with their own original tunes.

Tickets are available at The Open Book, $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Youth under 16 are $15. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., music begins at 7 p.m. A concession will be available by donation.
