Williams Lake cadets attend Canadian Forces weekend, learning archery, outdoor orienteering skills

The Meadow Armoury in Prince George played host to cadets and officers from cadet corps and squadrons across northern B.C., including Williams Lake’s own 202 Chilcotin Sea Cadets and 3064 Royal Canadian Army Cadets (Rocky Mountain Rangers) who were part of Exercise Neon Gold on May 5 to 7, 2023.

Cadet training included time on an indoor archery range, learning some orienteering skills, and a visit to The Exploration Place.

Cadet Sergeant Preston Sigsworth from 3064 Army and Cadet Chief Petty Officer Second Class Hamish Tough of 202 Sea got the opportunity to do some C7 rifle training with members of the Rocky Mountain Rangers, a primary reserve regiment in the Canadian Army.

Their training also included time on the SAT Range firing mock rifles like the soldiers use.

Both youths really enjoyed the opportunity to meet with and learn from members of the Rocky Mountain Rangers.

“It was an amazing experience, and time on the range was awesome” said Tough when asked about the opportunity with the soldiers.

While older cadets got time from members of the army, younger cadets were getting opportunities around Prince George including time at the Silver Tip Archery Club.

“Archery was OK, but I preferred the time at Exhibition Place Museum,” exclaimed Lance Corporal Erica Mawson of 3064 army cadets.

When asked if she would go again on a similar exercise if she got the opportunity, Mawson replied she would.

Both Sea and Army cadets are now wrapping up training and focusing on getting ready for their Annual Ceremonial Review on Sunday May 28th, 2023. The Canadian Cadet program is open to youth 12-18 years old and is no cost to join.
