Canadian wilderness explorer, John Dunn, will soon be doing presentations in Barriere and Clearwater about a 55-day trek to Ellsemere Island in the Arctic.
Dunn is scheduled to give his educational presentation at the Barriere Library on Friday, Jan. 24 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. then heading north to Clearwater to speak there at Dutch Lake Community Centre at 5:00 p.m. that evening.
Dunn will be also be presentin Kamloops, 100 Mile House and just north of Williams Lake in Big Lake and Likely, among other scheduled speaking engagements.
“The talk is about this expedition two of us did on Ellesmere Island," Dunn told Black Press Media. "We were the first people to do that as a ski trip back in the early 90s. After a few ski journeys I thought why not do a journey to Ellesmere in the summer, which in some ways is more challenging because the water isn’t frozen anymore and you can’t just walk across the ocean to get to your next destination."
Dunn said he will talk about the 750-kilometre journey and share the different challenges they had along the way.
"It’s a wonderful landscape and the summer is pretty cool up there in the ‘land of the midnight sun’ and the weather is surprisingly mild if you are in the right time and place during that time of year," he added.
Ellesmere Island is Canada’s northernmost and third largest island and the tenth largest in the world lying in the Arctic Archipelago.
Dunn currently resides in Canmore, Alta. and travels throughout Canada offering a lecture series to schools, libraries and communities based on his expeditions through some of Canada’s most spectacular wilderness landscapes according to his website: www.arcticlight.com
His presentations are renowned for being visually stunning as he shares his own photography, video and graphic content that he has personally tailored suitable to engage all ages.
A quote from Valemount Secondary’s principal following his presentation there can be found on Dunn’s website.
“You have opened the gate to the road less travelled, to discussions about pursuing dreams, even if they are difficult, out of the ordinary or way off the beaten track. I appreciated the professionalism and quality of your presentation: how you seamlessly integrate video, photos and graphics into your show really adds to the quality. I know the students were inspired with what they saw and so was I.”
Dunn will share the experience of this fascinating 55-day journey that began in mid-June with the two-person expedition pulling a sled on wheels for much of the way to carry their supplies, long days of hiking and the use of a boat.
