The Take Back the Night walk happens this Friday, Sept. 23 starting at 5 p.m. at Boitanio Park.

From Boitanio Park participants will walk on Seventh Avenue, Oliver Street, and Third Avenue, winding up at Marie Sharpe Elementary School.

Take Back the Night is an internationally recognized initiative that dates back to 1877 when women protested the fear and violence they experienced in the night-time streets of London, England.

In Williams Lake the annual event is organized and hosted by the Violence Awareness and Prevention Committee which is a committee of Community Policing.

This event empowers women and helps our community take a stand against violence, it is an excellent way of raising awareness, say organizers Irene Willsie and Wendy Chevigny.

Preventing violence is in the best interest of the entire community.

Everyone is encouraged to participate and send a clear message that violence of any kind will not be tolerated in Williams Lake.
