SLIDE SHOW: Conservation society celebrates Earth Day

The Cariboo Chilcoin Conservation Society celebrates Earth Day with a city garbage scavenger hunt with prizes.

Numerous bags of garbage were collected from streets, gutters, alleys and vacant lots around the lakecity this afternoon, April 22, by volunteers participating in the Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society's Earth Day event.

The society set up its mobile recycling unit in the Cariboo Growers parking lot at the corner of Third Avenue and Oliver Street and invited the community to come and help with the scavenger hunt for garbage in exchange for prizes. People were also invited to paint a wooden cutout of a bee, salamander or fish with water soluble acrylic paint to become part of an educational art installation. The garbage was weighed and then sorted on site by conservation society staff and volunteers into the various bins in the recycling unit depending on type of article collected -- paper, plastic, metal, etc.

Earlier in the day families participated in nature walks and games at the Scout Island Nature Centre as part of the Earth Day events.
