The Salvation Army in Williams Lake is always in need of non-perishable food items for lunches and special dinners and to give to people in need through their food bank. Here volunteers prepare plates for the annual Christmas dinner last December.

The Realm of Toys and Cleanway Supply Williams Lake are going head to head in a competition to fill the Salvation Army Food Bank with non-perishable food items.

The store owner collecting the least number of donations will volunteer to serve lunch one day at the Salvation Army kitchen wearing the company T-shirt of the winner.

Donations made at both locations qualify the donors for prizes.

The deadline for donations at both locations to qualify for prizes is coming up April 10.

At The Realm of Toys people who bring in a non-perishable food item will have their name entered into a draw to win a $100 gift certificate for each item donated.

At Cleanway Supply Williams Lake people who bring in a non-perishable food item will have their name entered into a draw to win a basket filled with Sudz Natural Soaps bath and body care products valued at $150.

A cash donation of $10 or more qualifies the donor for two draw entries.

“It’s rare that we don’t have any events that we either volunteer for or help organize, but we have nothing going on in March so we thought it would be nice to direct some of our energy at something useful for the community,” says The Realm of Toys co-owner Jazmyn Douillard.

“The food bank gets a ton of attention around Christmas but then I think people slow down with donations a little come spring.

“We thought this might be a nice boost.”

Cleanway Supply Williams Lake owner Kim Wogberg agrees: “People often think of helping out the food bank at Christmas but the reality is there are people in our community that are going hungry year round. We are hoping to not only help fill the empty shelves but, with our friendly competition, bring awareness to the struggles that many of our local people face year round.”

People who need their donations picked up can call Cleanway Supply at 250-392-5326. Cleanway Supply is located at 275 MacKenzie Ave. South.
