A Haida sculpture originally commissioned by the late Anne and Douglas Stevenson of Williams Lake has found its way into the Royal B.C. Museum. Bill Reid’s Grizzly Bear Mantelpiece, has a new permanent home at the provincial museum thanks to a $750,000 donation by the Audain Foundation. The renowned Haida artist carved the piece out of cedar in 1954, commissioned by the Stevensons for their family home in Williams Lake. Feb. 18 the piece was to be unveiled in the provincial museum’s First Peoples’ Gallery. “It is vital that we have contemporary works on display in the First Peoples Gallery, in addition to our extensive collection of First Nation historical objects,” said Pauline Rafferty, the provincial museum’s chief executive officer.
