Sandhill cranes in flight over Alexis Creek

Before sunset on Sept. 18, swirling in the air as an amorphous flock over Alexis Creek while uttering their archaic croaking calls, 56 sandhill cranes decided on a destination, formed a single north-south oriented line, and flew northward. The photograph shows 15 of the sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) in their lineal formation. Their winter retreat will likely be New Mexico.
