The Jan. 27 Horsefly River Roundtable meeting was highlighted by a conference call session between participants in Quesnel, Prince George, Beaver Valley, and Vancouver.

Because of the high cost of conference calling by the telephone, the meeting was condensed to approximately one hour.

Items discussed were as follows:

• The roundtable funding status is currently being worked on.

• Technical committee update, which is ongoing, but not written in stone as yet.

• Information on the farmland riparian interface program will be presented at the Horsefly Community Hall at 4:30 p.m. March 17, by representative Lee Heskith.

• Tourism brochures have been completed and will be at the tourist information centre in Williams Lake and elsewhere.

• The Salmon Festival will be on the Labour Day weekend in September.

• Fisheries Sensitive Designation. There was supposed to be a presentation in February, but unfortunately this will be rescheduled for a later date. There will be public consultations in the spring.

• Web site update. Our website horseflyriver.ca is up and running smoothly.

There seems to be some misconceptions surrounding the fisheries sensitive designation, and how it may affect existing water rights, and possible mining practices.

My only reply to that is to keep track of what is going on by attending all the roundtable meetings on a regular basis so there are no unexpected surprises down the road to ambush you.

To this point in time, only the existing restrictions and designations are in effect. Nothing new has been introduced yet, but you know it quite possibly will, so be forewarned.

The next meeting will be at the Horsefly Public Library Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m.

The guest speaker for the meeting will be Elaine Armagost from the Invasive Plant Council of B.C.
