Relay for Life seeks volunteers

The Canadian Cancer Society is inviting Williams Lake residents to a Relay for Life kickoff and informational meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The meeting takes place in Room 109 at the Overlander Convention Centre starting at 6:30 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to assist with event organization and to help out on the day of the event scheduled this year for June 2-3 at Williams Lake secondary, says Helen Owen, Canadian Cancer Society, team leader, community giving for the B.C./Yukon division.

People can register as a team of friends, family or coworkers, participate individually, or sponsor someone who is participating.

“Williams Lake has come together for seven years to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lives lost to cancer, and commit to fight back against this disease that touches us all,” Owen says.

She says organizers want to hear from anyone who has been involved in Relay for Life in any capacity or who has wanted to be involved in a relay,

“This year we are re-energizing, refreshing and revitalizing the event to make it the best it can be with even more activities, entertainment and ceremonies,” Owen says. “We plan to have plenty of fun, creative and engaging activities to keep participants motivated through the night time hours.”

She says the Canadian Cancer Society is the largest national charitable funder of cancer research in Canada.  “We fund the best researchers in B.C. and across the country on all cancers. We are so much more than just research, however — we offer practical and emotional support programs when you need us.”

Support programs for cancer patients include subsidies for travel to undergo cancer treatment, economical and welcoming patient lodges, and summer Camp Goodtimes for children with cancer.

Programs also include the CancerConnection volunteer peer support program and the Cancer Information Service with highly trained specialists who provide the most up-to-date information in more than 100 languages.

The Canadian Cancer Society also uses public education, health promotion, community action, and advocacy to government to advance cancer prevention.  To register for the Relay for Life and for further information contact Nancy Shelford at 1-800-811-5666.
