Reach a Reader: Change a life by volunteering with partners for literacy

Volunteers are the backbone of many organizations and Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy is no exception.

Volunteers are the backbone of many organizations and Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy is no exception.

CCPL provides the opportunity to work with many different groups of people and individuals such as seniors wanting to learn about technology, people needing to upgrade reading and math for job training or new citizens wanting to practice English.

Last year CCPL received funding for a project which placed seniors working with high school students and CCPL staff to learn technology and publish a book of stories from seniors in the Cariboo.

My favourite pastime is puppetry. As a volunteer with CCPL, I have been able to work with the Williams Lake Library to perform puppet shows for children, organize shows for community events (even at Senior’s Village) and also teach puppetry at schools and for other groups of children and adults.

CCPL also needs volunteers to read to senior, help at yearly community events such as the upcoming Family Fest, Children’s Festival and family golf event at Bell-E-Acres. Volunteers also help manage programs such as the Bright Red Bookshelf and Books for Babies.

If you are considering volunteering, ask yourself these questions: Do I like to meet new people? Do I want to feel that I am helping someone? Do I have an hour or two a week? Do I have some skills/knowledge to share?

CCPL trains new tutors to use those skills.
