Quesnel hosts Regional Climate Action Forum

The Quesnel Climate Action group is hosting a regional forum at the College of New Caledonia April 9.

The Quesnel Climate Action group is hosting a regional forum at the College of New Caledonia April 9.

Anyone interested in community based efforts towards tackling the fallout from increasing oil prices and climate change is encouraged to attend.

Tamara Sunsong from the Victoria Transition Town (TT) will be presenting an overview of this model of how local citizens can come together to create positive change.

The goal is to create more locally based economies where more citizens are involved in meeting their own needs.

This tends to make communities stronger, more democratic and more resilient in face of challenges.

The Transition Town approach is an international movement that began in Britain and more and more B.C. communities are signing on.

Sunsong has been active on the economic and food working groups of the Victoria TT and until recently she co-facilitated the food group.

She will address the advantages as well as the challenges that Victoria TT has experienced.

In all communities, groups and individuals have already been hard at work on projects that will make our activities more sustainable, reduce our carbon footprints and create more local economies.

Local food production has made great strides in the last number of years throughout the region.

The afternoon of the forum will be dedicated to short presentations about what local groups are undertaking and a cahnce for groups to look for ways we can co-operate as a region on common goals.

The college is waiving the rental fees and the group is asking participants to bring a bag lunch so that the cost of the forum can be kept down.

The group has set the entry fee for the day at $20. or whatever the person can afford.

More information and the registration form can be found on the quesnelairshed.org website.
