Scout Island Nature Centre is hosting a morning workshop on April 9 with B.C. natural history author, botanist and naturalist Rosamund Pojar.
The workshop is called Identifying Winter Trees and Shrubs.
Using keys in Pojar’s new book participants will practice identifying local deciduous and evergreen plants in their leafless state.
Pojar lives in Smithers and has 40 years of experience in wildlife education. She has contributed to many guidebooks, worked with the breeding bird atlas, and invasive weed council.
“We’re very pleased she’s coming to Scout Island to lead a half-day workshop that will hone our observational skills and help us understand how our rooted friends have adapted to local conditions,” says Jenny Noble, Scout Island Nature Centre co-ordinator.
Knowing how to recognize plants in winter is fun, adds to the enjoyment of winter activities and can be useful in everyday life, Noble says.
The free workshop runs from 9 a.m. until noon at the Scout Island Nature Centre. Dress for the outdoors, as this is a hands-on workshop.
