Leah Selk, the Station House Gallery’s exhibition co-ordinator has been hired as the full-time co-ordinator for the new Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society.

“This is an exciting appointment and promises very well indeed for the further development of arts and culture in the Central Cariboo,” says society chair Graham Kelsey, who announced the appointment Monday.

Selk starts in the position March 21. “We look forward immensely to the vigour and dynamism that Leah will bring to the sector,” Kelsey says.

Selk, who grew up in Williams Lake, is thrilled with the opportunity to put her training in the arts to work full time in her home town.

“I am very excited,” Selk says. “I grew up here and know all of the groups. I know people, and people know me, and know that they can approach me. I know arts and culture and what it means to the community.”

After graduating from Columneetza with a School District 27 award for visual and performing arts, Selk went on to earn a diploma in visual arts at Camosun College.

Then she moved to Concordia University in Montreal where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with distinction.

A specialist in photography and photographic installations, she is also well-versed in a variety of other art forms including computer applications, and web design and management.

While at Concordia she worked as a photography tech at the university and helped to co-ordinate Montreal’s Art Matters Festival.

For two summers while at university Selk came home to work at the Station House Gallery. For the past three years she has worked part time as exhibition co-ordinator for the Station House Gallery while also working in accounting for a local business.

She will be leaving both positions to become co-ordinator for the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society, which is charged with managing the new Central Cariboo Arts Centre in the old Williams Lake fire hall.

Selk is a former member of the Cariboo Art Society and currently a member of the Williams Lake Spinners, Weavers and Fibre Artists Guild.

Her volunteer work includes service as a board member for the Potato House Sustainable Community Society where she is also social media and marketing chair.
