The Williams Lake Library is hosting a week of board games play this month to promote Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27.
During the Board Games for Literacy project Jan. 20 to 27, the library will have board games set out on tables around the library for people to play.
“The goal is to have games available on every table in the library for people to play from Jan 20-27,” says library assistant Tracy Dunlop.
“Everyone who plays a game will be entered into our literacy draw to win a prize. The games will be collected up at the end and it may become an annual event.”
In support of the project the library is collecting donations of board games from the public and is asking people to donate their old games or purchase a board game from the Salvation Army for the library project.
So far area librarian Caroline Derksen says about 30 games have been donated for the project including games such as Outburst, Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, Scrabble, Checkers, Monopoly, Cranium, and card games such as Uno.
“Any game that involves reading or counting is good for literacy,” says Derksen.
She says people can continue to donate board games for the project right up until the week of the event.
Dunlop says it would be nice to have more Scrabble games for kids and adults, and more games for little ones such as Snap and Snakes and Ladders, and other career games for adults.
On Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. Rick Roy from Shaw Cable will be at the library to film people playing the games at the opening of the event, says Derksen.

Family Literacy Day was created in 1999 by ABC Life Literacy Canada (formerly ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation) to celebrate parents and children reading together to become lifelong learners.
Last year, nearly 315,000 Canadians participated in Family Literacy Day activities at schools, libraries, community groups, literacy organizations and in homes across the country.
